How to Open a Twitter Account (& What to do After That)

(Wait, back up... what's a Twitter?)

Taken from Twitter's support page and edited for Hadassah:

  1. 1.

Go to www.Twitter.com and find the sign up box, or go directly to https://twitter.com/signup. Enter your information, then click "Create my account." You should check off "Tailor Twitter based on my recent website visits" in order to have information applicable to you already prepared. Here, you will type in a username; Twitter will tell you if the username you want is available. Usernames are usually your name, but if that name is taken then add in spaces using dashes, underscores or your favorite numbers.
  2. 2.

Next, you will be asked to verify a few words so that Twitter ensures you are human.
  3. 3.

When you are logged in, search the names of your favorite organizations, news venues, celebrities and politicians in the search bar at the top of the page. Find Hadassah by typing in "Hadassah" in the search bar, or by clicking right here. Click the big "Follow" button on the page that you find you want to receive information about.

Okay, but what is it?

Twitter is an endless stream of short bits of information-including photos, but mostly text-that people and venues are sharing with the world. "Tweets" are whatever you want them to be: write your thoughts, feelings, what you had for lunch, what your cat did this morning, or how you feel about the presidential election. As you follow more venues, you will begin to see what other people are saying about the things that you care about, and people will tweet back at you to start conversations or with information they think you might be interested in. You can see what everyone else is talking about through your "Trending Topics," which are the top ten things people are saying in the world. When big events happen, they will top the list of Trending Topics. You can change your Trending Topics to be specific to the US, Israel or your own city by clicking "Change" in the left panel on the page.

But what's a hashtag?

In order to join in on conversations with people and organizations you care about, use the "#" symbol in front of key words in your tweets. Then, people can click on that symbol and it will lead you to a page to see what other people have said using that same hashtag. If something is a popular topic, many people will use the same hashtag in order to get more people involved in the conversation.
For example, for Convention, we will be writing "#Hadassah100" on all of our tweets in order to start a conversation about our Convention.

How to send a tweet to another Twitterer:

To tweet to another person, use the "@" symbol, and then type in their username, without spaces. For example, to tweet at Hadassah, you will type "@Hadassah Hey! I'm new to Twitter!" and we will receive the message instantly. If you do this, we will tweet back at you to welcome you to Twitter.

Not sure what to tweet? Retweet.

Sure, we sometimes feel that way too. If you can't think of anything to say, go to our Twitter page and "Retweet" what we're saying! To retweet, click the button at the bottom of a tweet that says "Retweet," which is accompanied by circulating arrows. When you retweet, the tweet is tweeted out to your followers.

As with most things in life, the more you put into Twitter, the more you will get out of it.
